Brina & String.si (Slovenia)

Issue d’une famille d’artiste, Brina Vogelnik-Saje n’a pas mis longtemps pour connaître les feux de la rampe. A 17 ans, elle est déjà sur scène pour interpréter des chansons traditionnelles slovènes puis elle rejoint plus tard String.SI en 2000 où elle apporte la chaleur de sa voix à une formation expérimentée qui jongle entre musique contemporaine improvisée, jazz post-acoustique et musique ethnique. Un passeport pour la "nouvelle tradition slovène" bercée par les compositions du violoniste Vlado batista. / Thanks to her family’s artistic roots, Brina Vogelnik-Saje was performing some traditional Slovenian pieces on the large stage at 17 years of age. Since 2000 she has been involved with String Sl where the warmth of her voice contributes to the style of this experienced band, which can equally deliver fine contemporary improvisations, post-acoustic Jazz or Ethnical Music, to the tune of Vlado Batista’s violin and of his compositions. They rightly impersonate a passport for the new Slovenian tradition.

Inspiré par Oum Keltoum ou George Wassouf durant sa jeunesse, Cheb Adel a passé du temps à donner de la voix dans les mariages profitant de ces fêtes pour travailler un style personnel et déployer son charisme naturel et ses mélodies orientales. Aujourd’hui, par sa voix douce et son registre sentimental, Cheb Adel représente la nouvelle génération des chanteurs oranais. / He spent his youth practising his unique style in weddings and other festive atmospheres, taking inspiration from such figures as George Wassouf or Oum Keltoum. Over the years he developed a lot of charisma, which helps him convey the sentimental print of his oriental music. His soft voice is also representative of the new wave of Oran-based singers.

Boban Markovic Orkestar (Serbia)

Dans la grande tradition des fanfares gitanes, Boban Markovic Orkestar est probablement l’un des plus talentueux ensemble d’Europe Centrale. Sacrée à plusieurs reprises "Meilleur Fanfare" au prestigieux concours de Guca pour ses musiciens d’exception, la formation serbe s’impose depuis 10 ans par ses prestations effrenées et enfiévrées qui en appellent à toute la musique populaire des Balkans évoquée dans les films de Kusturica (ils jouent dans Underground et Arizona dream). Une fanfare énergique comme un groupe de rock, festive, frénétique et parfois langoureuse... Une perle slave... / They are without a doubt one of the finest Gypsy ensembles in Central Europe, perpetuating the great tradition. Having won the Best Band award on several occasion at the revered Guca event for the skills of its exceptional musicians, the Serbian group has imposed itself through passionate and electric, awe-inspiring performances that resort to the powerful Balkans’ heritage. They have featured in some of filmmaker Emir Kusturica’s better known movies such as ‘Underground’ and ‘Arizona Dream’. This pure party band, as energetic as some young Rock stars, performs in a gleeful but also at times sensuous way their vibrant music. The Slav jewels one may say.

Blues du désert, transe et gnawa... Venue du Sahara, la musique d’Hasna El Becharia soulève un mélange furieux de vent de sable, de karkabous, de traditions séculaires, de guitares électriques et de thé à la menthe. Un univers où le sacré et le profane se croisent sans cesse et où cette artiste du Sud-Ouest algérien excelle. Femme libre et sans concession, Hasna El Becharia exploite toute la richesse instrumentale et vocale du Sud Sahara pour retrouver la musique des anciens et des répertoires populaires algériens. / In a Sandstorm of Ancient Saharan tradition, electric guitars, karkabous and mint tea, Hasna’s music furiously exalts Blues, Trance, and Gnawa from the desert. It is a universe where sacred and profane incessantly meet and co-exist, to the artistic advantage of this South-West Algeria lady. As a free-spirited and uncompromising artist, she digs into the deepest of sub-Saharan vocal and instrumental resources to extract a renewed ancient style that she wonderfully mixes with popular Algerian trends.

Star de la jeunesse algérienne, Rym Hakiki est une artiste de caractère qui a su allier l’héritage traditionnel de "Nassim El Andalouss" aux sonorités flamenco ou aux envolées pop. Surnommée la nouvelle merveille de la chanson andalouse, cette jeune femme au parcours atypique (elle était sportive de haut niveau !) a tout quitté pour se consacrer à la musique et gagner les coeurs algériens par son charisme et ses talents de vocaliste. / Rym Haikiki is the apple in the eyes of today’s youth in Algeria. She is a temperamental artist who succeeded in bringing together the tradition and heritage of Nassim El Andalouss with flares of flamenco and modern Pop. She has already been nicknamed the wonder of Andalusian music and for a reason: this young woman, formerly a professional sportswoman, left her discipline to devote herself to music and by doing so she won so many Algerian hearts through her charisma, raw talent and her voice that her career is worth noting.

Marzoug (Algeria)

Fanfare typique de la ville de Biskra, la troupe Marzoug tient ses origines du désert, aux portes de la chaîne de montagnes des Aures, au Nord-Est de l’Algérie. Organisé autour de Jellal Soudani, virtuose de la chekwa (cornemuse), l’ensemble est formé de tablas (tambours à baguette) de qarqabous (crotales métalliques) et d’un chanteur qui se produisent traditionnellement lors des mariages, des fêtes et de certaines manifestations religieuses. Un souffle festif comme un appel du désert... / They are a typical band from Biskra, a town in the desert, at the foot of the Aures Mountains in North East Algeria. Marzoug’s front man is Jellal Soudani a master of the chekwa (local bagpipe) and the ensemble comprises tablas (percussions with sticks) qarqabous (metallic crotales) and voices. They usually perform in local festivals and big weddings as well as religious celebrations. They will inject in you the lively and appealing warmth of the desert.

Enzo Avitabile e i Bottari of Portico (Italy)

Avec son ensemble de percussions, Enzo Avitabile perpétue la tradition rurale de la Campania, région de Naples, où résonnent les rythmes primitifs des tonneaux et cette pulsation obsédante et énergique qui monte telle une transe. Les textes interprétés à la manière d’un blues méditerranéen raconte en dialecte napolitain les souffrances des peuples à travers la guerre et la colère teintée d’une certaine ironie. Une forme d’expression spectaculaire et hypnotique dont les racines sont millénaires. / Accompanied by his multi-drums ensemble, Avitabile is very much in keeping with the old tradition of rural Campania (around Naples) where the primitive, energetic and obsessive rhythm from these casks pace in a trance. The lyrics, in a Naples dialect, depict the lives and sufferings of a people through war and the anger that ensues. They are delivered like a Blues an bear their fair share of irony. This hypnotic style with its spectacular delivery is thousands of years young!

Un savant mélange appelé "Global Style" qui fait monter de festival en festival la température des dance-floors. / He is a figure head of the Spanish scene, and an active, multi-oriented artist. The Lord’s music is like a mutant form, rooting in the traditional and sunny sounds of a certain type of World Music; and also in genuine modern Rock or Ethnical Techno. This intriguing offspring under the name Global Style, is heating up the festivals’ dance floors ever-increasingly.

Mika & Rico (Egypt)

Né à Rome d’une mère anglaise et d’un père égyptien, Mika est un jeune artiste surprenant, un déraciné talentueux qui tisse depuis dix ans un canevas sonore des plus innovants. Il produit un mix où s’entrechoquent du folk irlandais, du Soukouss africain, de l’Acid-Jazz, de la House industrielle mais aussi des quarts de ton modal issus de ses influences natales du Sha’abi égyptien. Une musique fusionnelle originale au service d’un discours social, politique et sensuel, chargé de revendications et de sarcasmes. / Being born in Rome from an Egyptian father and an English mother favoured Mika’s development into an extremely interesting individual. For the past ten years, this multiply rooted artist has been extending the canvases of his music, from Irish Folk to Acid Jazz and African Soukouss to Industrial House. This explosive blend is technically impressive too with for instance his use of the Egyptian Sha’ Abi quarter tone. This fusion of styles serves extremely well some challenging and sarcastic conceptions about society, politics and love.

De son Iran natal au flamenco de ses aspirations musicales, Emmanuel Hoseyn During remonte le cours de l’histoire en empruntant la piste tsigane, celle qui prend source dans l’Orient Musulman. Ce parcours musical au gré des analogies met en lumière les traditions Ouzbeks et Tadjiks, la puissance des voix et le jeu du luth dutôr qui évoquent étrangement celles de lointains cousins andalous. Une parenté frappante que Yengi Yol magnifie avec son "flamenco d’Asie Centrale", figure libre et inspirée, à la fois inattendu et familier... Universel. / Frontman Emmanuel Hoseyn During is traveling back in time along the ancient gypsy route, from the Muslim East all the way to where flamenco lies. This musical journey is fraught with analogies and the educated ear will spot the obvious illustrations of the Uzbek and Tadjik traditions. The voices are potent and the Dutôr Lute strangely reminds you of the famous styles from Andalusia. It is precisely this similarity of sound and harmony that Yengi Yol exploits to the full in this Flamenco from central Asia. It is a wild and unexpected yet familiar and universal sound.

Les “Tyour Gnaoua d'Essaouira accompagnés de Bojan Z, Karim Ziad, Julien Lourau et Michel Alibo” est une création née à Essaouira, la rencontre incandescente entre les héritiers de la tradition gnaoua et artistes issus d’horizons divers. En totale improvisation, les Tyour gnaoua d’Essaouira (menés par le Maâlem Abdeslam Alikane), Karim Ziad, Bojan Z, Julien Loureau et Michel Alibo font revivre les grands moments d’un événement pas comme les autres, le festival d’Essaouira "gnaoua et Musiques du Monde". / Originating in Essaouira, Gnaoua Spirit is the explosive meeting between the traditional elements of the Gnaoua School and artists from other musical shores. The key word of this event is improvisation: The Gnaoua Essaouira led by the Maâlem Abdeslam Alikane meet with Karim Ziad, Bojan Z, Julien Lourau and Michel Alibo to make you experience a
reenactment of what magically occurred at the Essaouira festival (Gnaoua & World Music).

Prochain bourgeon à fleurir sur la scène électro méditerranéenne, Naab allie les rythmes de la ville occidentale et les chants orientaux comme le symbole de son nomadisme culturel. Un va-et-vient permanent entre la furie métropolitaine (avec ses breakbeat jungle et ses basses groove) et les ambiances subtiles d’une culture berbère enfouie (avec des incursions sonores dans les allées de souks) où l’imaginaire semble vagabonder, à la recherche de ses racines. / He is a precious bud about to blossom out of the Electro-Mediterranean tree. Naab makes the statement of his own nomadic state through his use of allied urban beat and Middle Eastern voices. It is like a constant rocking back and forth between the Jungle beats and groovy bass from the metropolitan fury and the subtle Berbere (i.e. from a particular region in Maghreb) atmospheres reminiscent of the alleys and routes in a Souk (North African market) where imagination is free to ramble, back to its roots.

Son chant ne s’embarrasse pas de frontières. Il les utilise comme les cordes d’une même voix. Françoise Atlan explore les traditions judéo-espagnoles et arabo-andalouses en quête de racines communes entre les rives de la Méditerranée. Un travail original et intemporel, porté par une voix magistrale au service de l’émotion, du "tarab" ou du "duende". / There are no cultural or national borders for Françoise’s singing; on the contrary she tries to add up as many vocal chords as cultural mixings. Her quest for a common root between the various Mediterranean coasts leads to her exploration of Judaic-Spanish traditions on one side and of Arabic-Andalusian traditions on another. This results in a very unusual work, which is no victim to temporary fashions. Her imposing voice lends itself extremely well to the gamuts of emotions in Tarab or Duende.
